As remakes, reboots, and sequels grow in increasing numbers, fans worry that a newer take on an already defined ‘classic movie’ may not have the same qualities as the original.

However, the rise of the fandoms, a community or subculture of fans who share a common interest or belief, are ensuring their voices are heard so that filmmakers do not mess up the production of their favorite movie brands.

So, what are remakes, reboots, and sequels? A remake is simply an updated version of a movie with the original plot and a new cast. Reboot, on the other hand, is a recreation of a film’s storyline and characters. A sequel, of course, is the continuance of the chronology of a storyline.

But seriously, how many times can a movie be remade, rebooted, or receive sequels?
Let’s take a look at some of this year…

The Invisible Man
(Feb 28, 2020)

If you have not seen the movie, it is worth the watch. The Invisible Man is a direct reboot of the 1933 film with the same title. Staring Elisabeth Moss from The Handmaid’s Tale, this storyline takes the mad scientist affect in warps it into a modern-day horror about a relationship gone wrong.

Scoob!
Warner Bros. Animation

Skeptical of the voices? Don’t worry. Scooby’s voice will be done by Frank Welker (one of the original voices) and Shaggy’s voice is by Will Forte (Last Man on Earth) who comes close to performing the character’s signature voice.

Mulan
(Aug 21, 2020)

Yes, Disney is turning its animations into live-action films. Mulan is just one of several animations Disney has remade since The Jungle Book (1994).

Mulan, unanimated, will still be the woman warrior before her time, but instead of going against the leader of the Hun Army, Mulan and her fellow soldiers will fight against a witch.  She will still fall in love, but with a different guy. Finally, there will be no singing only memorable songs from the animation played throughout the movie.

Candyman
Candyman

Jordan Peele’s production of Candyman is created as a sequel to the 1992 film. Peele will use the same legendary filming spot as the movie location. The changes made to the filming location will be greatly seen. For what was once a Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago has now been revitalized with expensive condos.

The lead role will be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen). His is baby Anthony McCoy from the original film (the baby Helen Lyle saved from the fire). Nia Da Costa, director (known for Little Woods), has mentioned that Peele is not replacing Tony Todd’s iconic role as the original Candyman. Todd will make a guest appearance in the 2020 film. However, Helen Lyle character will be revived by actress Cassie Cramer. The original actress for the role, Virginia Madsen, will not make any appearance in the new movie.
